Potty Training Day 3

Today ends day 3 of the 3-day potty training. I guess we'll know tomorrow how much of it will stick with him when we aren't with him every second of the day. Although we're still treating tomorrow as a similar day to make sure that he makes this new potty thing a habit. When Evan woke up this morning his bed was soaked again. We definitely don't have the nighttime thing down. Then we placed him on the potty with a slight fight from Evan (we've realized that he does better on the potty if he has something in his hand). He went on the potty and then throughout the morning he still had some accidents and we weren't sure how well this 3 day thing was going to work with him. But later in the day he told me when he needed to pee a few times and we even did our poo-poo in the potty. I think he may have the poo-poo thing down. He took a nap for over 3 hours (so this training is exhausting him as well as us) and woke up dry. I coerced him to the potty where he relieved himself. Then dad encouraged him to go potty before dinner and again relieved himself. Before his bath he went on the potty again. So he knows to go on the potty and is really good at holding in his pee for hours now. What we aren't sure of is how well he's able to tell us when he needs to go potty. I think tomorrow will tell us more about that. But he's done a great job and I think it will stick with him (at least we hope)!

Potty Training Day 2 Continued

Okay, just after I wrote the last post I heard a noise in Evan's room. Since we told him to call for us if he needs to use the potty, I barged on in. He was really just tossing around, but already his bed was wet (not even 30 minutes into his sleep)...note to self...make sure Evan empties his bladder before bed (he never went on the potty, but we were trying not to force him - I think we needed to wait longer). We put him on the potty while I changed his sheets. He never went on the potty, but his bed was quite wet so hopefully his bladder is now empty. I guess we'll know for sure in a few hours.

Potty Training Day 2

Well, day 2 is now behind us. There was much improvement from day 1 and yet still much improvement will be needed tomorrow. I think we went through about 10 pairs of underwear all day and yesterday we went through about 10 pairs in the first 2 hours!! Evan woke up an hour early and was soaked...nighttime will be the biggest challenge. Then for the next hour or two I was up with him while Ken went back to bed and Evan fought me every time I tried to put him on the potty. I thought our potty training was over. But then I left the house and when I came back Evan had done much better and had gone potty a few times. Then with me he let me know that he needed to go poo-poo and so we made it in time to the potty for quite a lot of pee and poop. That was our most impressive trip of the day. After his nap (which he was dry for) he never really told us that he had to pee in time. We had more accidents later in the day than we had in the morning. Looking back though, most of the day was spent in one or two pairs of underwear that stayed dry for a long time. I think progress has been made. I'm not sure if we're going to be fully trained in 3 days like some kids are, but I can't see us turning back to diapers now. We'll see how tomorrow goes.

Potty Training Day 1

Our 2 year old is officially moving to big boy status. We began our intensive 3 days of potty training today. Overall I'd say it was successful. We began the morning by putting on big boy underwear and saying goodbye to all of our diapers and wipes. Then for the first 1 or 2 Evan would pee in his underwear every 5 to 10 minutes. I can't tell you how many pairs of underwear we went through. Thankfully we had lots of laundry to do so most of the pairs have all been washed and some even worn twice today! By mid-morning he was able to tell us a few times before he went to the bathroom and he went in the potty!!! Then right before his nap he peed and pooped in the potty!!! Way to go Evan! After the nap (he was woken up by Otis which means cranky baby) so he didn't want anything to do with the potty. But thankfully he didn't pee during his nap and actually went an hour or so after the nap before going again. The rest of the evening has been full of some accidents and some times letting us know and making it to the potty. For day 1, I'm pretty excited. The one thing I have to say for anyone else who wants to try this method is that it is exhausting!! And I can't imagine trying to potty train like this on my own. I am so grateful that the church office is closed this week so Ken is home with us. In fact, I'm extremely grateful for Ken because Evan seems to make it to the potty more often with Ken than with me. Must be a guy thing!

I was looking through past videos and I found this one that I had to post. Evan is singing his favorite song from his Blue's Clues DVD. He is just so cute!!

Halloween

Evan dressed up as Bob the Builder for Halloween. We had a really fun time. First on Friday, Evan went trick-or-treating to the businesses in downtown Glendora with Isaac Fobel and Faithe Long. He came home with SO much candy so we gave it to church for the Trunk-or-Treat the next day. So on Halloween we went to church for the Trunk-or-Treat and spaghetti dinner with Grandma Cheryl. At the Trunk-or-Treat he had fun going from car to car to get candy. However, his favorite part was someone dressed as a gorilla. At the end of the night he actually just sat on the ground in front of the gorilla and everyone just thought he was so cute!!! After that we went trick-or-treating at my friend Melanie's house and to some of her neighbors. We only made it to 5 houses because he's quite the slow walker, but he had a blast. He must have been pretty tired since that night he slept longer than he may have ever slept before!!!

Blessed Football Sunday!

I love football! I love to come home from church and watch football. We don't have cable, but with our antenna we get channels 2 and 4 so I can watch some Sunday games. And since Ken is now working all day Sundays, Sunday is becoming my day to spend with Evan. Well, tonight is the first time the TV has been on with football playing. It was a glorious night! I was cleaning up Evan's dinner and I came out of the kitchen to see that he had climbed onto the couch and was enthralled with the football game. He's never done this before to watch anything on TV so I am quite excited that Evan and I will be able to enjoy football together!!

Best Friends

We spent the evening with Jackie and David Long last night watching the USC football game. Evan and Faithe are best friends since they see each other almost every day. They really are cute together. They are learning to share and learning not to push and shove (mainly Evan).

Too Cute

Here's just an adorable picture of Evan. He loves taking pictures!

Silly Boy!

Evan is such a character. He always keeps us laughing. Here are some of the silly things that he does.

Coalinga con los abuelos, tia, y prima

We went to Coalinga to meet up with Molly and Ella and to see Grandpa Steve and Grandma Mary. It is always so fun to get the kids together. We're pretty fortunate that although Molly, Ella, and Damon live in Seattle, we get to see them often.

Not Camera Shy!

Well, this morning I wanted to take some pictures of Evan since people keep asking to see current pictures of him. After each picture he kept saying, "more." So, here are a bunch of pictures of our little boy. Isn't he cute?

Swim Lessons

Evan and I just completed 2 weeks of swim lessons through Rancho's parks & rec. Kate and Molly Galbreath joined us for class so that made it even more enjoyable. We practiced blowing bubbles, floating on our stomach and back, kicking, going underwater, and jumping into the water. We weren't too surprised when our report card said that we need to repeat the class. I think the only thing we mastered is going underwater and that's because I'm in control of that one. We had a lot of fun and we'll keep practicing in our pool.

Evan With a Girlfriend

Evan is quite good with women. Here he is with one of his girlfriends: Faithe.

Evan's mode of transportation

Besides the fact that Evan loves to run everywhere, here's another method he's found for traveling.

Potty Training!

Although Evan is only 17 months, we've decided to start potty training him because he's a pain-in-the-a** when you try to change a poopy diaper. We're working on getting him to like his little potty seat (which he does in this picture). We'll start to really work on potty training in July. I'm sure it will take forever since he probably isn't really developmentally ready for it.

Friends

Here is Evan at the mall with some friends (Molly Galbreath, Liam & Ethan Estrada).

The Sickness...

Friday I took Evan back to his doctor for a check-up. His temperature was normal but the doctor sent us to the lab for blood work just to check everything out. They also put a bag in his diaper to try to get a urine sample (that was quite interesting to me). A few hours later I got a phone call from the doctor, not a nurse, so I knew it wasn't a good sign. He called to say that Evan's white blood cells were high and that means his illness is most likely a bacterial infection instead of a viral infection. Since his temperature was normal he said he'd give him a prescription of antibiotics and we'd then monitor him. He also said that the urine sample would tell us more information so I told him I'd stop by the office to see if Evan had peed and to pick up the prescription after Evan's nap. Well, he woke up from his nap and felt hot to me so I took him right over to the doctor. When his doctor saw us he asked how he was doing and when I said that he felt hot they immediately took us back. They didn't even have a room available, but they took his temperature, and it was over 103 so they started a sponge bath on him. When a room was available they moved us in, continued the sponge bath, and checked his penis for urine - no pee - the back got loose and fell off so the pee just went into his diaper. The doctor decided to give Evan a shot of antiobiotics instead of just a prescription. We were to wait around to make sure he didn't have an allergic reaction and also to try to get Evan to pee so they could get a urine sample. I swear within 10 minutes of that shot he was my baby boy again. He was talking and asking what everything was around the room - medicine is just amazing. We sat around for about an hour, but I couldn't get him to pee because I couldn't get him to drink his liquids. Since then, Evan has still had a slight fever at times, but he is acting so much better than he was before. I think our baby boy is back to normal. We have another check up tomorrow morning so we keep praying that the tests will show that Evan is healthy!

Sick!

So, I'm at the mall with my friends from work and we're shopping before we go eat dinner to celebrate my birthday when I get a frantic phone call from Ken. He's at the doctor's office with Evan and Evan has a fever of 104.5. I then left the mall and met him at the doctor's office where the doctor was giving the final instructions - keep an eye on him, keep him cool, and if we want to get quick results then we should take him to the emergency room. So off we went to the hospital. He was extremely lethargic and that was the scariest part - it didn't seem like that boy was Evan! After checking in, Evan threw up ALL over me - I mean ALL over me. It was so gross! Then as we continued to wait for the 3 hours we were in the waiting room, he threw up 3 more times. Finally they called him for chest x-rays and then they called us to this small building where they tested him for influenza and the swine flu. They gave him some nausea medicine and then tested to see if he could keep down liquids. The influenza test came back negative, we won't know about swine flu for 4 days (but they don't think it's that), and he didn't throw up his liquid. The conclusion: Evan has a good, ole stomach flu. We finally made it home around 11pm. Thankfully he slept in a bit. He woke up with a temperature of 100, but is acting much more normal. He wanted to wear his hood and sunglasses, which he always wants to wear, so I take that as a good sign that he's feeling better. Currently he's asleep so I'll keep you all updated if anything changes. Thank you so much for your prayers! We appreciate them so much!!! And thanks to Longs who take such good care of Evan everyday, and to my friends from work who kept me calm and thanks to the Calocas for coming to walk and feed Otis and to bring us clean clothes to wear at the hospital! We love all of our friends and family so much!!!

All Boy!

Well, Evan has now moved from a walk to a trot. And with that come many cuts and bruises. As you can see in the center of his forehead is a big scrap from a fall he took at a friend's house today. He has another large scrap on the left side of his forehead from when he fell out the front door, landed on his head and completed a somersault. And if only you could see the cuts and bruises on his legs! He cries for a short amount of time, enjoys eating his ice as opposed to putting it on his wounds, and then is back trotting around.

New Toy

Evan is all boy and can't sit still for very long so we got him this climber/slide/activity thing. All he wants to do is stand at the top and be "king of his world."

Arrowhead

Evan and I went up to Arrowhead yesterday to visit my friend Kate and her daughter Molly. It was a beautiful day! We had a really fun time!! He's definitely hitting the stage where all he wants to do is be free to walk around. He wasn't as content in his stroller as he usually is. My baby boy is growing up!

Coalinga con los abuelos

Evan and I spent a week and a half in Coalinga with my parents. It was nice to be in a small town where you can walk everywhere. I helped take care of my niece, Ella, while Molly and Damon were in Hawaii. It's amazing how quickly you forget how much work taking care of a newborn is! It's been so nice to have 4 weeks of vacation! I can't believe work begins again on Friday. It'll be hard to leave Evan in the mornings and I think he'll have a tough time with it too!

Evan y su tigre

Today I had to take the day off to stay home with Evan. Monday begins 4 weeks that I'll be home to take care of him. Halfway through today I was wondering how I am going to survive 4 weeks. What do you do with a 14 month old??? I'm sure we'll figure out some fun things to do and places to go, but seeing his joyfilled face on this tiger makes me glad for the upcoming vacation.

Playing in the Snow

Ken spoke at the Flipside Epidemic (Youth) winter retreat over the weekend. Evan got to play in the snow for the first time. He really didn't like it, but we were able to get a few cute videos of him to share. He also fell the first time we let him walk around outside - a complete faceplant!
